Who were they?

By Chris Rogers

The Wood family were very large in Hothfield in the 1800s and owned or rented land in neighbouring parishes too.

This image is a postcard published by 'AW Boughton Hothfield' who also published a postcard of the village policeman.  This postcard was bought by April Wood-Ashton, a living descendant of the Wood family, who kindly allowed us to scan it for the collection.  The carriage looks new with windows, a roof rack, steps and bench seating.  It looks like a carrier (bus service) but we cannot trace a local carrier of that name.  Who were these Wood Brothers and were they related to the Hothfield family?

There was a WOOD family of Carriers in Lydd (Romney Marsh) but a bit early for this photo -  and as a Henry Wood from Great Chart, related to the Wood's of Hothfield, owned land in Romney Marsh,  which he left to a Thomas Wood (will of 1817) I keep searching hoping to find the answer!
